Journalist in exile
„There is no return to my homeland, because homeland is not only your old street, your house, your country. Homeland is the people who populate it. I am just afraid right now, afraid of my own people.“

Olga Romanova is a Russian journalist. She runs the NGO "Русь сидящая" (Russia Behind Bars). She currently helps Ukrainian refugees and detainees in Russia. Olga Romanova was a well-known journalist before the Russian media were brought into line. Afterwards, she worked as a journalist for "Echo Moskvy", "Business Week" and "Novaya Gazeta", among others, but above all as an activist for the rule of law and the protection of minorities in Russia. She fights tirelessly with her NGO "Russia Behind Bars" against the inhumane treatment of prisoners in Russian penal colonies and supports their family members - since 2017 from German exile.
Freedom of the press in exile
There are many journalists in exile. They could not stay in their home countries because they represent the truth, fight against propaganda and repression. They are enemies of the autocratic rulers in Belarus and Russia.
All people who have to leave their home countries unexpectedly or unprepared because of wars and persecution have the ground broken out from under their feet. Media professionals are no different. They quickly want to work as journalists again in exile. Journalists from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine report on their lives in exile and their current situation.
They have all arrived in Germany and are trying to build a new life for themselves. They continue to practice their profession as freelance journalists far from home.
