On 18 September 2025, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom hosted the event “Rainbow Families in Europe and Germany” at the Hans-Dietrich-Genscher-Haus in Berlin. The evening focused on the legal, social, and political challenges faced by same-sex parents and their children across Europe. Moritz Körner, Member of the European Parliament (FDP, Renew Europe), delivered an opening statement emphasizing the importance of equal rights and European cooperation in advancing family equality. The program featured the presentation of the study “The State of Rainbow Families in the European Union”, followed by a panel discussion with experts from politics and civil society. Dr. Salim Amin, Policy Advisor for Human Rights and International Rule of Law, moderated the panel discussion and opened the floor for public engagement.
The publication highlights the significant disparities in family rights among EU member states, addressing issues such as parental recognition, adoption, and access to reproductive technologies. It underscores the need for harmonized EU policies to ensure that LGBTIQ+ families enjoy the same protections and opportunities throughout Europe.
The Berlin event was well-received, praised for its open discussion and commitment to addressing ongoing inequalities in Germany and Europe. As a follow-up, the study was presented in Brussels in November 2025 to further promote dialogue at the European level.
