The Bangkok Human Rights City initiative is a collaborative effort between the Friedrich Naumann Foundation Thailand, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and the Office of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT), launched to promote and integrate human rights principles into the governance of Bangkok. This initiative aims to transform Bangkok into a city that respects and upholds human dignity and inclusive participation, ensuring that all residents enjoy access to services and opportunities without discrimination.
The initiative started as part of Bangkok’s vision of becoming a “Livable City for All,” with a commitment to embed human rights in its policies. Since 2022, the BMA has been advancing policies that improve quality of life underpinned by human rights values.
In 2025, FNF Thailand, together with the BMA and NHRCT, organized a training seminar for over 100 city officials focusing on familiarizing them with human rights concepts and how to apply these principles in their roles. The training included lectures on human rights principles, followed by workshops where participants identified human rights issues in Bangkok, as well as the agencies responsible for addressing these challenges. This highlighted the need for multi-sector collaboration to drive progress.
In August 2025, the BMA officially declared its intent to make Bangkok a full “Human Rights City,” reaffirming a commitment to integrate human rights to its policies. The BMA recognizes this initiative requires cooperation from all sections of society, with the focus on development centered on human rights principles.
The initiative reflects Bangkok’s aspiration to create a city that translates human rights principles into everyday practice. FNF Thailand continues to support this journey by facilitating capacity-building and partnership development, aiming for a Bangkok where human rights are deeply embedded in the city’s development plans.
