Indonesia´s President Joko Widodo mandated the implementation of a national strategy for business and human rights. A Presidential Decree outlined responsibilities based on the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). It emphasizes the state’s duty to protect human rights in business, the obligation of businesses to respect these rights and access to remedies for victims of violations.
FNF Indonesia´s partner organization, the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights, has prioritized business and human rights and set up national and provincial task forces. However, progress has been slow, with insufficient inter-ministerial coordination and low participation from businesses, including both large companies and small- and medium-sized enterprises.
FNF and the above ministry cooperated in organizing a workshop with representatives from the national task force evaluating efforts to enhance business and human rights initiatives across other ministries. A collaborative platform for monitoring and evaluation was established. The event highlighted the necessity for business actors to engage with provincial task forces and seek further training on human rights issues. Additionally, the workshop addressed the need for better training and coordination to empower line ministries in monitoring violations and for businesses to create effective remedy mechanisms.
