Human rights defenders (HRDs) play a crucial role in safeguarding human rights in democratic societies. They advocate for those whose voices are often silenced in polarized societies, where individuals or groups may feel oppressed or excluded from participation in state affairs. HRDs provide a vital voice and safe refuge for these marginalized individuals. To effectively protect and promote human rights, it is essential to equip HRDs with the practical knowledge, skills and tools necessary to carry out their work safely and efficiently.
In 2023, FNF Kenya trained 250 HRDs across eight counties: Nairobi, Marsabit, Turkana, Murang’a, Nakuru, Kericho, Homabay and Kilifi. The training introduced foundational human rights concepts, equipping participants with basic skills. In 2024, it recognized the need for a comprehensive curriculum to further enhance HRDs’ practical skills and provide a reliable reference for their work.
As a result, FNF Kenya developed a curriculum covering key topics such as human rights monitoring, investigation, documentation, reporting, referrals, personal safety and well-being and digital security. It also created a human rights defenders handbook outlining step-by-step guidelines for HRDs to effectively perform their work. This handbook serves as a valuable reference for HRDs in the field.
Moreover, in 2024, FNF Kenya conducted three pilot trainings in Mandera, Siaya, and Malindi, reaching 75 HRDs. Participants provided input and recommendations to refine the curriculum and the handbook for future use.
