Lima hosted the First Diversity Summit, organised by the Instituto Pro Libertad (IPL) with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom – Andean Countries. From 6 to 8 December 2024, the Summit brought together more than sixty young leaders from across Peru, together with academics, activists, and representatives of civil society, to strengthen dialogue and coordinated action in favour of LGBTIQ+ rights and broader human rights protections.
The event addressed urgent challenges such as violence against trans people, the absence of legislation on civil unions, and limited access to healthcare and essential supplies. Key presentations explored inclusive communication strategies, legal inclusion, and the economic impact of diversity. The Summit included workshops that were led by Indigenous activists and youth leaders, fostering dialogue, empowerment, and concrete commitments to equality.
Discussions throughout the Summit underscored the urgent need to shape inclusive and evidence-based public policies. A central panel highlighted key human rights challenges that remain unresolved in Peru: the absence of legal recognition for same-sex partnerships, the persistence of violence and discrimination – especially against transgender persons – and unequal access to health services, including recurrent shortages of essential medications.
Participants explored a wide range of thematic issues. Sessions examined the role of strategic communication in building social acceptance; presented research demonstrating how legal safeguards reduce discrimination and foster equality; and shared practical tools for public advocacy. The economic dimension of inclusion also featured prominently. Representatives from global LGBTIQ+ chambers of commerce and the organization Open for Business showcased how diversity drives innovation and productivity, while LGBTIQ+ entrepreneurship contributes to sustainable economic development.
By empowering a new generation of advocates, the First Diversity Summit marks an important step forward in Peru’s ongoing journey toward a more inclusive and rights-respecting society.
