16th Ciné Droit Libre Film Festival

Côte d'Ivoire

From 20 to 23 November 2024, the 16th edition of the Ciné Droit Libre Festival was held under the theme ‘Where is the world headed?’ Organized by Ciné Connexion in collaboration with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), this edition brought together more than 500 participants from various backgrounds: young people, community leaders, film actors, journalists, students, and human rights defenders. The event aimed to promote human rights through cinema, encourage civic engagement, and stimulate reflection on contemporary democratic and societal issues.

The festival featured several key activities, including:

  • The official opening ceremony, marked by institutional speeches and the presentation of the general programme.
  • Film screenings highlighting human rights violations.
  • Training workshops and a masterclass designed to build participants' capacities and stimulate civic debate.

The Workshop focused on the following pressing issues:

  • Fact-checking and disinformation aimed at young people.
  • Media and information literacy, to strengthen critical thinking in relation to media content.
  • A workshop on civic engagement, citizenship, and leadership, led by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, for youth leaders in the municipality of Yopougon.
  • A space for exchange between an experienced film maker and young professionals or film students, focused on sharing experiences and the realities of the sector.

In addition, two workshops for children raised awareness among young people and their parents about the abuse of children and young girls through activities and screenings of appropriate films. This 16th edition of the Ciné Droit Libre Festival confirmed its role as a platform for expression, training, and advocacy for human rights and freedom of expression. The active participation of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and its partners helped to strengthen the educational and civic impact of the event.
