Sisters in Islam (SIS) Forum is a Malaysian non-governmental organisation that advocates for the rights of Muslim women within the context of Islam. SIS Forum has been FNF’s partner since 1993.
Telenisa, the legal clinic under SIS Forum (Malaysia), provides free legal advice on matters relating to Family Law in Sharia, including divorce, polygamy, alimony, matrimonial property, and other related issues. Since its inception in 2003, Telenisa has assisted more than 10,000 clients, empowering them to make informed decisions based on law and facts.
In 2024, Telenisa served 188 clients - 92% were women, mostly from low-income households. Housewives, single mothers, and women navigating divorce proceedings formed a significant portion of these clients, many of whom remain financially dependent on their spouses. Each year, SIS Forum launches the Telenisa Statistics and Findings to share insights with the public, lawmakers, and civil society, highlighting pressing issues in marital disputes and Sharia court proceedings that affect women and children.
Over the years, Telenisa has documented hundreds of cases involving both Islamic Family Law and Sharia Criminal Offences Law. The Telenisa 2024 Statistics identified the top three reasons for divorce among Muslim women in Malaysia as:
SIS Forum stresses that these challenges must be addressed not only within families but also at a systemic level. Policies that strengthen enforcement of maintenance orders, improve access to legal aid, and expand support services for survivors of violence are urgently needed. At this year’s launch, lawmakers, women politicians, and activists joined the discussion, reflecting on the realities faced in parliament and in communities. Many expressed appreciation for Telenisa’s unwavering dedication to reaching out to women in crisis and guiding them through complex legal and emotional challenges.
Through its steadfast work, Telenisa continues to serve as a lifeline for women seeking justice and dignity, proving that accessible legal support can transform lives and drive systemic change for years to come.
