The reality has only worsened over time for the LGBTIQA+ community in Lebanon. It continues to face legal persecution, social stigma and increasing violence. A recent survey found that 70% of Lebanese citizens still reject homosexuality, while Section 534 of the Penal Code criminalizes "sexual acts contrary to the laws of nature." This law, alongside others, fuels ongoing discrimination and emboldens violent behaviour toward LGBTIQA+ individuals. Lebanon’s deep economic and financial crisis has forced many LGBTQ+ individuals to leave the country, further shrinking the once vibrant LGBTIQA+ scene in Beirut to only a few safe spaces. Political pressure against the community has also increased, creating a more hostile environment.
In partnership with LevantX, The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Lebanon produced a documentary titled "The Dragging of Rights: Beirut's Discrimination against the LGBTQ+ Community". The film was produced in Beirut two years ago and highlights the experiences of two drag queens, Diva and Zuhal, in Beirut, and the daily discrimination and challenges faced by LGBTIQA+ individuals in Lebanon.
On 12 December 2023, the FNF Lebanon and LevantX hosted a private screening of the documentary. It was followed by a panel discussion featuring Diva and Zuhal, who spoke about their personal experiences of living as drag queens in a society that rejects them. A prominent LGBTIQA+ activist who provided broader context on the legal and social challenges faced by the community moderated the panel discussion. The discussion also touched on the potential for legal reform, although the panelists expressed doubts about meaningful progress without sustained pressure. The event also included a stand-up comedy sketch by a Lebanese comedian, who humorously addressed freedom of speech and individual rights in Lebanon. His performance added a hopeful tone, reminding attendees that humor can be a powerful tool in resisting repression. Moreover, the evening culminated with a drag show featuring Diva, Zuhal and other local drag performers. The performances were a bold display of self-expression and resilience, offering a moment of celebration in the face of adversity. The event was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews, with attendees praising the bravery of the queens and the visibility the event provided for the LGBTQ+ community. Many attendees described the event as a much-needed beacon of hope during difficult times.
The Friedrich Naumann Foundation and LevantX plan to keep supporting LGBTQ+ rights through future events and initiatives aimed at amplifying the voices of those who are marginalized.
