The Sofia Pride Film Fest 2024 stands out as more than just a film festival - it catalyzes conversation and change. In a country notorious for its widespread homo- and transphobia, as well as discrimination against the LGBTIQA+ community, this festival is an act of defiant visibility. It challenges audiences to look beyond the screen and reflect on their communities, prompting them to consider the future they wish to create for themselves and others. Now in its fourteenth year, the festival continues to welcome a diverse audience, despite facing physical and verbal attacks at almost every screening since 2019.
Still, through the power of cinema and a carefully curated selection of films, the festival unites the LGBTIQA+ community and its supporters. This year’s program focused on two critical themes: transgender rights, especially following the complete ban on legal gender recognition in Bulgaria since February 2023, and the rights of same-sex families. By highlighting universal themes such as love, loss, identity, and hope, the festival does more than entertain - it inspires transformation.
Organized by the Youth LGBTIQA+ organization Deystvie (Action), the only group in Bulgaria providing pro bono legal services and court representation for LGBTIQA+ individuals, the festival also supports legislative changes through strategic litigation. In a world often divided by fear and uncertainty, the need to come together is more urgent than ever. From 4th to 15th June 2024, Sofia's House of Cinema became a sanctuary where silenced voices were heard and unseen images demanded attention, fostering a sense of understanding and connection through art.
