Mozambique has made some strides in combating corruption; however, violence remains a significant issue. From July 8th to 12th, a workshop was held in Maputo, organized by Fondation René Cassin with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. It gathered experts and journalists from different countries to talk about how to protect journalists and make sure the media stays free. The participants discussed ways to keep journalists safe while they do their important job of reporting the news.
During the workshop’s opening, Professor Severino Elias Ngoenha, a prominent Mozambican philosopher, delivered an inspiring speech. He addressed the challenges facing Mozambique, especially with the upcoming elections on 9 October 2024. Professor Ngoenha pointed out that conflicts often arise around election times, leading to violence, kidnappings, and restrictions on free speech. He emphasized the need for transparent and fair elections and underscored the critical role of journalism in safeguarding democracy during these pivotal moments.
Fondation René Cassin and FNF have a longstanding partnership, particularly in West Africa, where they work to promote human rights, the rule of law and individual freedoms. They also support human rights defenders and activists by helping them build the skills they need to protect human rights.
Both institutions will expand their efforts into Portuguese-speaking countries, aiming to build stronger networks and partnerships in those countries at the regional level.
