Zimbabwean author Tsitsi Dangarembga was honoured with the Africa Freedom Prize by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Sub-Saharan Africa. The award ceremony took place at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg on 5 October 2023, recognizing Dangarembga’s outstanding contributions to literature and social justice. Her acclaimed novel "Nervous Conditions," a cornerstone of African literature, explores themes of gender, colonialism, and identity in post-colonial Zimbabwe.
In her acceptance speech, Dangarembga reflected on the importance of the Prize, stating, "The Africa Freedom Prize recognizes individuals who have freely and willingly taken on the task of undoing the violations of the past as they manifest in our present dispensations." She expressed her appreciations for joining other distinguished Africans who have championed freedom and justice.
Dangarembga’s journey has been marked by resilience, notably facing arrest in July 2020 for peaceful protest in Zimbabwe. Her conviction was overturned by the High Court in May 2023. Throughout her career, Dangarembga has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights, education and social equality. The award highlights the crucial role of literature and the arts in driving social change in Africa.
