The event was opened by former member oft he German Bundestag Katja Adler with a keynote speech on China's potential influence on German politics.
In recent years, foreign interference in democratic processes has become an increasing concern. The EU and its member states face challenges not only from the rise of extremist parties within Europe but also from deliberate external attacks. With the rapid evolution of social media and growing geopolitical tensions, the risk that state and non-state actors manipulate political decisions and undermine democratic systems is rising, through financial incentives, disinformation campaigns, or hacking. This threat was particularly evident in the super-election year 2024.
Against this backdrop, on 17 October 2024, FNF Europe organized the EU Liberal Hour in Berlin. Participants included members and staff of the FDP's former parliamentary group, policy experts from think tanks, and Prof. Dr. Shieh, Taiwan’s representative to Germany. The discussion focused on the risks of Chinese influence on European politics and strategies to strengthen democratic resilience.
The EU Liberal Hour is a recurring dialogue format connecting German and European perspectives. It provides insider insights into current EU debates and places them within the liberal discourse and political strategy.
