Russian President Vladimir Putin, right, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán during a meeting in Moscow, Russia
In this publication, “Russia – Paving the Way for Autocracies”, the author, Dr. Thomas Brey, has compiled an overview that, by highlighting the major developments, makes the destructive impact of Russian propaganda across Europe visible. In addition to propaganda, Russia is now able to influence the political landscapes of several countries through an “axis of autocrats” in ways that serve its interests.
This study also takes a closer look at Hungary and at Southeast and Central Europe as the longest-standing testing ground – and, for Putin’s purposes, the safest training environment – for spreading Kremlin-friendly and West-critical disinformation. The axis begins with Putin himself, runs through Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, as well as his junior partner Milorad Dodik in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and extends to Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico; and according to most forecasts, to the newly re-elected Czech politician Andrej Babiš as well.
This axis aims to help Putin’s sympathizers in politics, business, and society gain power and to increasingly block, weaken, and divide the West’s rules-based and values-based alliances.
